Field Guide To Western Medicinal Plant Herbs

Despite modern medical practice with its high tech methods and synthesised drugs and remedies many people still hold to more traditional methods of treatments and cures using commonly obtainable herbs and spices. Every spice, every herb, every plant from black pepper seeds through cinnamon to mango, banana and foxglove may be used in the practice of alternative medicine. Here are just some.

Cinnamon

The aromatic inner bark of the cinnamon tree is stripped and shaped into small tube shapes then sun dried. The resulting tube can be powdered and used as a spice in baking or as a flavouring agent.

Cinnamon has been used in Ayurvedic medicine as a treatment for fever and diarrhoea and to disguise disagreeable smells and tastes of herbal medicines. It is also claimed to be effective in relieving the symptoms of colds and sinusitis. It can be used to aid digestion and ease dyspepsia and intestinal parasites.
