Catastrophic injuries occur in youth sports on a regular basis. Being prepared for a serious injury can mean the difference in the outcome of the injury for the athlete. Organizations that plan ahead, create an emergency action plan (EAP), and review their plans annually are in positions to better protect and care for their injured athletes.

Each emergency action plan is unique and specifically designed for each organization depending on the type of medical training of their staff, the type of emergency equipment available, and venue specifications. If an organization has multiple venues, then an EAP should be written for each one.

Because plans are only valuable if used, EAPs should be reviewed and updated annually prior to the beginning of each sports season. All athletic and administrative staff should be trained in the specifications of an EAP.
