Biomedical Research Center
Geography covers the whole world by definition, and as such, it's a really huge topic, both to teach and to learn. An interesting way to make geography lessons more fun is to provide a framework understanding of biomes. Even though biomes can be divided into as many as 28 different areas, having knowledge of the basic types will provide enough background to jump-start comprehension of world geography.
Introducing Biomes
The six major biomes of the world are: tundra, evergreen forest, deciduous forest, grasslands, rainforest and desert. Depending on the age level of the students and the amount of time to be spent covering biomes, more varieties could be included, such as taiga, wetlands, coral reef and so on.
Begin by generating interest in biomes by having students look at a large map of the world. Discuss how different kinds of plants and animals come from different areas. They may be able to locate savannahs in Africa or the rainforest in the Amazon River basin. Most students will be able to name animals native to the African savannahs and the Brazilian rainforest.
