A Medical Transcriptionist – sometimes called a Medical Language Specialist – is responsible for taking the recorded audio produced by a medical professional and converting it into a digital document that can be printed or digitally stored so it may become a permanent part of a patient’s medical record. These documents have a required structure and special guidelines depending on the specialty and type of record.

Medical Transcriptionist Qualifications

Education is recommended but not always required. While most companies seek at least two-years of on-the-job experience in an applicant, there are a few companies willing to take new transcriptionists in entry-level positions on a probationary basis at a lower rate of pay. There are many mail-order and online courses available to become a Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT). Selecting a school that is affiliated with a transcription company can provide a much smoother transition into a paying position.

Who Employs Transcriptionists?

The need for a Medical Transcriptionist is generally dictated by the type of medicine being practiced. In most cases family medicine and pediatrics are considered to be general practitioners and are not required by their insurance to have records transcribed.
